Bereket is an Ethiopian citizen who was in a relationship with an Israeli citizen whom he married. They have a 13 year-old daughter together. Bereket began the process of obtaining spouse visa, but after he and his wife separated, the Ministry of the Interior terminated the process and ordered Bereket to leave Israel. This was despite the fact that he was a full partner in raising their daughter.
When Bereket came to us, Adv. Chen Weiss from our office immediately filed a humanitarian request to settle Bereket’s status. The request was made in order to prevent an unbearable and unacceptable situation in which Bereket’s young daughter would be forced to grow up without her father, to whom she is very attached, simply because her parents had separated and his ID card had been taken from him as a result of their separation.
After two years of reviewing the humanitarian request, it was decided to approve it and return Bereket’s ID card to him.
